Dr. Scott Shelby is the Owner and Clinical Director at Family Solutions Counseling Center. Dr. Shelby is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LA #1117), a Licensed Professional Counselor (LA #3515), an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and a LPC Board Approved Supervisor for Counselor Interns and Marriage and Family Therapist Interns. Dr. Shelby is a Past President of the Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and a Clinical Fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. Dr. Shelby has been married for 16 years to his wife Brienne and has 2 wonderful daughters, Amanda (15) and Abbey (10).
Dr. Shelby completed his Doctorate of Philosophy Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisiana Monroe. He is also a graduate of the Master of Arts Degree Program from the University of Louisiana Monroe, Marriage and Family Therapy Program.
In his limited clinical practice, Dr. Shelby chooses to work only with highly motivated individuals, couples, and families experiencing very difficult, challenging, and complicated issues. He has developed a passion, interest, and expertise in couples-related counseling. He enjoys experiencing positive outcomes with individuals and couples as they reach their relationship goals and find peace, satisfaction, and happiness with themselves and each other.
He has advanced specialization working with individuals and couples struggling through infidelity (physical or emotional), loss of interest in your partner, emotional disconnection/separation, and strained relationships in your marriage or in your committed relationships.
Dr. Shelby also has advanced training in all issues surrounding separation and divorce (collaborative divorce mediation, divorce recovery, and parent/child issues).
Dr. Shelby also works well with "less than motivated" adolescents and teenagers as they adjust to stressful issues and complicated changes they face such as disconnection from parents, divorce, school related issues, social concerns, bullying, depression, thoughts of suicide, anxiety, and substance abuse. His approach when working with adolescents and teenagers blends individual counseling and family therapy to maximize successful outcomes, and he requires a collaborative effort among the child, parents, and caregivers.
When working with individuals, couples, and families suffering from these types of issues, his hopes are to assist his clients to work through deep hurt, disappointment, self-blame, anger, and other negative emotions and begin to rebuild trust, intimacy, emotional security, love, commitment, and self-confidence with yourself, your partner, and your children.
Dr. Shelby has provided counseling services since 2003 and has worked in several contexts, which add to his expertise in helping children and adolescents, individuals, couples, and families resolve their impasses.
He began his career by providing counseling services to children and families in many different areas across North Louisiana (Monroe, Tallulah, Lake Providence, and Oak Grove) in homes, prisons, and schools. It is in these homes and prisons where he found the invaluable resources of hope and creativity to move clients towards their goals.
Dr. Shelby has an additional specialty when working with children and families with school related issues as he served as the Director of Mental Health Services for Monroe City School District's Safe School Healthy Students Program prior to full time private practice at Family Solutions Counseling Center.
He previously was an adjunct faculty at Northcentral University and The University of Louisiana at Monroe as he taught Masters and Doctoral level courses in marriage and family therapy and counseling.
Dr. Shelby has been providing professional counseling in a private practice setting since 2007.
"My goal for my clients is to help them develop greater satisfaction and fulfillment in life and to experience greater success in their relationships and career. Counseling can be a useful tool when difficult and painful issues are the focus, rather than joy and happiness that you know your life deserves."
