Dr. Scott A. Shelby, PhD, LPC-S, LMFT-S, AAMFT Approved Supervisor, Past President of LAMFT
Dr. Shelby is licensed by the State of Louisiana as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (# 3515), and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (#1117). Dr. Shelby received a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisiana Monroe, in Monroe, LA. He is recognized as an LPC Board approved supervisor for Provisional Licensed Professional Counselors and Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists.
His areas of expertise include, but are not limited to: Marriage and Family Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Parent Training, Couples Counseling, Adolescent Counseling, Behavior Management/Decision Making, Personal Growth and Exploration, Stress Management, Multi-cultural Counseling, Group Counseling, Crisis Intervention, Critical incident and crisis counseling, Divorce/Blended Family Issues, Career Counseling, Counseling in a school settings, Improvisational/Creative Therapy, and Group Therapy. Dr. Shelby’s LPC/LMFT supervision mentors consisted of Dr. Wendel Ray & Dr. Bradford Keeney.
Dr. Shelby has also taught the Doctorial Level Supervision of Supervision and Practicum courses at ULM and conducts professional presentations throughout the year to licensed professionals seeking the continuing education requirement for Supervision.
Academic Requirements
An applicant must obtain a master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) in a regionally accredited educational institution or a certificate in marriage and family therapy from a post-graduate training institute accredited by COAMFTE;
or
An applicant must obtain master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or marriage and family counseling from a program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) in a regionally accredited educational institution with a minimum of 6 graduate courses in marriage and family therapy including coursework on the AAMFT Code of Ethics and a minimum of 500 supervised direct client contact hours, with a minimum of 250 hours of these 500 hours with couples and families, and a minimum of 100 hours of face-to-face supervision. The training of the supervisor must be equivalent to that of an AAMFT Approved Supervisor or AAMFT Supervisor Candidate.
Supervision Requirements
After receipt of a qualifying degree an applicant must complete a minimum of two years of supervised work experience in marriage and family therapy that includes at least 3,000 hours of clinical services to individuals, couples, or families. Of these 3,000 hours, 2,000 must be direct work with clients and 1,000 may come from such things as writing case notes, workshops, public relations, consulting with referral sources, etc. The required hours of supervision are at least 200 hours, of which at least 100 must be individual supervision. Up to 100 hours of supervision can be received during group supervision and may be counted toward the 200 hours.
Examination Requirements
Applicants must pass the national examination in marriage and family therapy as determined by the advisory committee. No other examination will be accepted.
